What to Check Before Approving a Custom Sock Sample

Review artwork, dimensions, fit, construction and packaging systematically before approving a sock sample for production.

Review against a written specification

Collect the current artwork, size requirements, composition, colour references and packaging brief before reviewing the sample. Confirm whether the item is a design sample, a fit sample or a final production reference. Ask which details represent the planned production method and which are temporary.

Record the sample version and review date. If several people need to approve it, nominate one person to collect feedback into a single list. Conflicting instructions or feedback on an older version can make the next revision harder to assess.

Inspect the design at actual size

Check the spelling, logo orientation, position and appearance of small details on the physical sock. Review the sock laid flat and worn in its intended fit. A screen preview does not show every effect of stretch or the appearance of the finished construction.

Compare colours using the agreed reference and lighting conditions. Photographs are useful for recording differences but should not be treated as a final colour standard. Describe the change required, identify the area and attach a labelled photograph where useful.

Check fit and construction

Review the agreed dimensions, foot fit, cuff comfort, heel position and toe finish. Check the left and right items together and compare any sizes included in the sample set. If cushioning, grip or other features are specified, check placement and whether they match the intended use.

Ask which measurements and tolerances will be used during production inspection. Do not turn a subjective sample impression into a performance, compression or safety claim. Any required performance testing should be agreed separately and supported by appropriate records.

Review care, labels and packaging

Confirm the stated composition, care instructions, size marking and any other required label information. The information should match the agreed product and destination requirements. If packaging is not supplied with this sample, keep its approval as a separate open item.

Inspect sleeves, hang tags, barcode placement, boxes and the number of pairs per pack where applicable. Consider how the product will be received and sold. Packaging artwork should have its own version and approval record so a later change is not overlooked.

Give a clear approval or revision decision

Use a written list with three decisions: accepted details, changes required and questions still open. Avoid a general approval if an essential detail is unresolved. Ask whether changes affect cost, timing or the need for another sample.

When the agreed requirements have been met, identify the approved sample version and final artwork. Confirm the production specification, inspection criteria and commercial arrangements before proceeding. Keep the reference sample and approval record available for later comparison with the finished order.
