Materials

Choose the material around the way it will be worn.

Start with the intended use, feel, thickness and target price. A fibre name alone does not define the finished sock: the blend, yarn and knitted construction all need review.

Material directions

This is a planning guide, not a confirmed yarn inventory. Availability, composition and claims need to be agreed for your project.

Cotton

A direction to discuss for everyday, casual and promotional socks. Specify the desired hand feel and thickness, then assess fit and washing on the sample.

Combed cotton

Combing removes short fibres before spinning. When comparing cotton options, request the yarn specification and a physical sample rather than judging by the name alone.

Polyester

Consider for sports and promotional briefs. Ask about yarn type, feel and the finished construction. Do not assume a particular drying performance without testing.

Nylon

Discuss nylon as part of a blend or selected construction. Review the finished sock for stretch, feel and durability against your requirements.

Spandex

An elastic fibre direction for stretch and fit. Confirm the blend and check recovery, cuff hold and comfort after wearing and washing.

Merino wool

A direction for outdoor and wool sock projects. Specify wool percentage, yarn fineness, reinforcement and care requirements; assess the sample in the intended use.

Bamboo fibre

Ask for the exact fibre identity and composition rather than relying on a marketing name. Confirm the wording and supporting documentation before preparing labels.

COOLMAX®

A branded fibre technology from The LYCRA Company. Confirm genuine yarn sourcing and any trademark requirements before using the name or making performance claims. Availability is not confirmed here.

Blended yarn

Agree a complete composition rather than a single headline fibre. Review the combination of feel, fit, cost, care and construction on the sample.

Confirm more than the fibre name

  • Exact composition and yarn specification
  • Thickness, cushioning and finished weight
  • Fit, stretch and cuff comfort
  • Care instructions and washing behaviour
  • Colour references and required tests
  • Price and availability for your quantity

Any moisture, antibacterial, recycled-content or other performance claim needs suitable evidence for the finished product.

Yarn colour references

Supplied photographs show colour-book references. Screen colour, yarn availability and the final blend must be confirmed against physical samples.

Match your material brief to a sock style

Everyday & brand collections

Start with hand feel, appearance, thickness and care. Review a representative size before approving the size range.

Sport & studio

Define activity, footwear and cushioning. For grip socks, review the sole construction alongside the yarn choice.

Outdoor & seasonal

Discuss climate, footwear, wool blend and reinforcement. Agree the care requirements and test conditions.

Plan your project
